When it comes to changes in the skin and face that naturally come with the aging process, there are a number of options available. These include both surgical procedures and non-surgical treatments. For patients who do not want to have a surgical procedure but would like to reverse the signs of age, there are many potential choices for rejuvenation. Out of a range of treatments for wrinkles, sagging skin, and other signs of age, PDO threads stand above the rest.

What are PDO Threads?

PDO threads are unique, dissolvable sutures that are used to lift and refine your features and firm your skin. PDO is short for polydioxanone, which is a flexible and durable polymer. PDO threads effectively take years off of the appearance and are then, over time, harmlessly absorbed into the body.

PFO threads are inserted upward under the skin, causing a youthful suspension of the underlying tissues and sculpting and renewing your features. The result is firmer, more youthful-looking facial lines and firmer skin. There are different types of PDO threads, each providing a different lifting and rejuvenating effect. At the Ariel Center, we provide mono threads and barbed threads.

Mono Threads

Mono threads provide a smaller lift and boost collagen production to tighten and firm the skin and achieve a range of anti-aging effects. Mono threads target frown lines, forehead creases, sagging undereye area, sagging in the mid-face and lower-face, a double chin, and the neck area.

Mono threads are smoother and are used to create an underlying structure or a mesh that helps to smooth fine lines and improve skin texture. Mono threads are used to address lines around the mouth, crow’s feet and other lines around the eyes, and fine lines and wrinkles in other areas of the body.

Barbed Threads

Barbed PDO threads create a more significant lift. These PDO threads are equipped with barbs that better grasp the tissues and lift them upward more dramatically. These threads are used on sagging cheeks, a heavy brow, sagging skin in the neck and jawline, and other areas.

Barbed threads are rougher, and the barbs latch into the underlying tissues of your skin like little fishhooks and lift upward. These rougher threads support and lift the features of your face to create a sculpted, youthful-looking effect.

How Does a PDO Thread Lift Work?

PDO thread lifting is a minimally-invasive treatment that can be thought of as an alternative to facelift surgery. While the results will not be as significant as a surgical procedure, PDO thread lifting sculpts, firms, and defines the features to take years off the appearance.

In total, your procedure will take about one hour. To begin, we will mark your skin in the places where the threads will be inserted. We will apply a local anesthetic to ensure you’re comfortable during your treatment. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, we will carefully insert the PDO threads using a blunt-tipped needle.

The needle is loaded with a PDO thread, and it is injected upward through the tissues under the skin. The needle is then withdrawn, leaving the PDO thread in position under the skin, where it keeps the tissues lifted upward and the skin tightened and boosts collagen production. This process is repeated, however many threads are required to achieve your aesthetic goals. Each thread acts as an anchor lifting the skin and tissues upward.

What are the Benefits of PDO Threads?

For patients who don’t have to have a facelift or other surgery, a PDO thread lift is an ideal treatment to turn back the clock. This treatment achieves more lifted and sculpted features and smoother, firmer skin. PDO thread lifting is popular because of its many benefits, including the following:

Who is a Candidate for PDO threads?

A PDO thread lift is designed for people who want to lift and firm their features and address moderate sagging skin in the face and jawline without having a surgical procedure. Ideal candidates for PDO threads should meet the following requirements:

  • Are in good health
  • Are not pregnant or nursing
  • Do not have an infection, rash, or outbreak in the area
  • Facial sagging is moderate, not severe
  • Typically, are between the ages of 30 and 55 (however, younger or older patients will benefit)
  • Have realistic expectations about the results of PDO thread lifting

Results after a PDO thread lift

Once the PDO threads are in place, we will massage them and the surrounding skin to ensure the tissues are lying smoothly and the threads are properly in place. The PDO threads achieve an instant result because the lift is mechanically achieved. You will notice tighter, firmer skin and more defined features.

In addition to these instant effects, you will see continuing improvements in your skin because the PDO threads boost collagen production and renew and remodel the skin structure. The thicker the threads, the greater the boost in collagen production and more transformative results. The ultimate results take 2-3 months to become fully visible.

Results with PDO threads last for 1-2 years, then start to fade slowly over time.

Recovery after a PDO Thread Lift

No downtime is required after PDO thread lifting. During your minimal recovery period, you will feel some soreness and swelling, and there may be some bruising and redness at the puncture sites. These side effects will last for about a week, sometimes less or more.
